Sunshine Coast Council sought assistance to develop a five-year Strategic Sports Plan. This Plan required the optimisation of Sunshine Coast’s elite sporting sector (elite training and competition) whilst also identifying broader regional benefits, capitalising on the natural assets of the area and opportunities involving player pathways (from grassroots to elite) and sporting facilities.
MI Associates developed a demand analysis that considered historic participation trends and potential upcoming market needs across Australian, localised and a macro-economic background. Additionally, a supply / facilities matrix considered the region’s built and natural assets to gain an understanding of potential facilities to showcase (and develop) in alignment with elite sporting standards (i.e. Market needs). A Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA) was developed taking into consideration the demand analysis and facilities matrix information to assess the region’s industry capability, competitiveness and opportunities to leverage the region’s major sporting event product and the top ranked sports were packaged up into an Action & Leverage Plan.
This analysis provided a guide for Sunshine Coast Council to focus on the identified top tier sports and their Action Plan steps across economic and social considerations for the region. Each Action Plan step highlighted potential partners to create a shared responsibility of implementation and positioning of the region.
